2015 Soter Pinot Noir North Valley
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale $24.94 (reg. $29.94)
Oregon Pinot just keeps getting better, but also pricier! Finding a reasonably priced bottle that delivers the classic Willamette Valley profile keeps getting harder, but Soter’s ‘North Valley’ is a definite win. It’s not easy to become an icon in Napa Valley, but for Tony Soter, that was just the first chapter. After a thirty-year career in Northern California, consulting for the likes of Shafer, Stags Leap Cellars, and his own label Etude, Soter ‘retired’ to a new winery in the Willamette Valley with his wife. Over the past ten years, the Soters have established themselves as among the best in the Willamette, with the Wine Advocate writing they “have achieved a similar status in Oregon” as in Napa.
Far from being a Napa denizen’s version of Oregon Pinot, the ‘North Valley’ Pinot Noir could serve as a real Willamette Valley calling card: fresh and Burgundian, it delivers the Oregon experience with classic notes of dark red cherry and spice. Soter partners with farmers in the northern AVAs (Chehalem, Ribbon Ridge, Dundee Hills) to ensure high quality, sustainably farmed fruit. This Pinot is definitely meant to be enjoyed today or with short-term aging since you don’t want to miss the bright fruits or vivacious energy on the palate.
2015 is shaping up to be a pretty great vintage; warm like 2014 but with even better structure and balance. At this price, you can stock up and make it your go-to Pinot for the next 5 years! Cheers!
