2015 seems to be giving more than a few German winemakers their best vintage ever, and even Klaus Peter of Weingut Keller admits that there hasn’t been anything like this since 1971. Considered an “outstanding vintage for sweet wines” (Wine Advocate), Keller’s 2015 lineup is “the most promising of his career” (Vinous), which given that the elder Keller helped built the reputation of the Rheinhessen region, is an impressive claim. Keller’s Morstein Auslese is among the most stunning and decadent sweet rieslings to come on our radar recently.
With 97-points from John Gilman, the Auslese Morstein is "stunning juice", and at just under $40 for the 375ml, it’s a great value for a special occasion Auslese that will age for decades, too!
Morstein has been recognized as a terrific vineyard going back to the 1200’s, and the Keller family owns the oldest plantings in this grand cru site. 2015 was a warm, beautiful vintage yet the harvest was chilly, preserving racy acidity to balance the opulence of the ripe fruit. These characteristics were particularly potent in Morstein, which has some of the most limestone rich soils in Rheinhessen and tends to harvest in November.
This 2015 Auseles Morstein has the power to turn any occasion into a special one, and at this price you might find yourself looking for any excuse to open another!
