"Simply put, Bien Nacido Estate is now one of the hottest wineries in California. Readers owe it to themselves to check out these superb, handcrafted wines." - Antonio Galloni
Bien Nacido is arguably one of California’s grand cru level vineyards, with the unusual reputation of being suited to a wide variety of grapes thanks to its diverse terroir and microclimates. When it comes to Syrah, Bien Nacido’s legendary Z Block is practically unequaled, and was the very first source of Syrah for cult producer Sine Qua Non. Bien Nacido Vineyards’ Estate Syrah comes from this high elevation block, and with a dollop of co-fermented Vigonier, it is California’s answer to the great wines of Cote-Rotie. “Dense and pliant, with tremendous character, the 2016 has so much to say” (Vinous), and with 95pts this is an absolutely stunning representation of the Central Coast’s premier vineyard.
Since the 1970s the Miller family has built Bien Nacido into one of California’s finest vineyards and viticultural nurseries, attracting the state’s best winemakers. Their estate wine program has emerged as a boutique benchmark, turning out “classy, impeccably made wines” (Wine Advocate), and today’s cuvee is a stunning Syrah that bridges the gap between California and the Northern Rhone.
2016 was a “terrific year for Santa Barbara County” (Dunnuck), and Bien Nacido’s Estate Syrah is a world class find that you won't want to miss.
95 points, Vinous: "The 2016 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous and also shows just how well suited parts of this site are to Syrah. Dense and pliant, with tremendous character, the 2016 has so much to say. Inky dark fruit, leather, licorice, menthol, spice and tobacco add aromatic nuance, but the 2016 is really a wine of depth, texture and resonance. A dollop of Viognier rounds out the blend." - Antonio Galloni
94 points, Wine Enthusiast: "Very gamy aromas of raw and roasted lamb, rosemary tips and sweet tar dominate the nose on this bottling from the iconic vineyard. The tarry and raw meats tones extend to the palate as well, where dried berries and cracked black-pepper flavors ride a simmering acidity."
94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from the Z block and is co-fermented with 2% Viognier. It has a very deep purple-black color with vibrant magenta hints and an exuberant, wonderfully powerful nose of black and green olive, cracked black and green peppercorn, cassis, blueberry and boysenberry preserves plus warm blackcurrants, violets, lilacs, saddle leather, bitter chocolate and tar—dense, layered and deep. Full-bodied, it fills the mouth with oodles of ripe, savory-accented fruits, with very ripe, finely grained tannins and juicy freshness to foil, finishing very long and flavorful. Yum! 611 cases were made."
