For over two hundred years Louis Latour has been one of the most recognizable names in Burgundy, and many, per the Wine Advocate, “experience their first encounters with Burgundy” through Latour. Latour is no under the radar gem, but what they lack in artisanal cachet, they make up for with one of the most impressive collections of grand crus in all of Burgundy. At the top level, Latour treats their grand crus just like a tiny boutique domaine, and this Echezeaux is hand harvested from vines over 40 years old, with only a miniscule 250 cases produced.
As is so common with challenging and unpredictable growing seasons in Burgundy, 2016 turned out quite classic, with exceptional and characterful wines that showcase terroir. The “precise, perfumed, suavely tannic 2016s” (Vinous) are in many ways, the perfect wines to explore top crus like Echezeaux, as their personality will be on full display. Despite being in the business for a couple centuries, Latour has continued to evolve, making positive changes in recent years, and the winemaking is “evolving in the right direction” (Wine Advocate), especially at this top level.

On the plus side there is excellent concentration and plenty of dry extract present on the medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate while buffering the moderately firm, youthfully austere and lingering finish where the only nit is a hint of warmth."
