The 2016 vintage for Burgundy is sure to go by faster than we can blink! Following on the heels of the deliciously ripe and large-scale 2015s, the '16s are more classic in style, appealing to long time Burgundy fans, but are likely to be scarce too, especially for in demand monopoles like the Clos des Ursules 1er cru. Fortunately we have managed to secure this newly released flagship Beaune from Louis Jadot, and among a lineup of pretty world class Burgundies, Jadot’s ‘Clos des Ursules’ is a true gem in their impressively varied portfolio.
For nearly 200 years the Jadot family has been the exclusive owner of the tiny walled 1er cru and has kept the price reasonable compared to other monopoles like Clos des Epeneaux or of course Romanee-Conti. The 2016 vintage of the Clos des Ursules is one for the ages (and the cellar). Declared a “truly outstanding vintage of Clos des Ursules in the making” by View from the Cellar (94pts), Clos des Ursules, under the Domaine Heriters Jadot label, is a unique site, an ancient ‘clos’ located within the Vignes Franches 1er cru. Showing “cherries, red plum, gamebird, a very complex base of soil, cedar and a lovely topnote of woodsmoke” this is the kind of complex and terroir driven Burgundy we go crazy for. Far “more transparent to terroir than the 2015s” (Vinous), the best 2016s are beautiful and elegant Pinots, and this Clos des Ursules one of Jadot’s finest. Cheers!
