"In its levity and animating energy, this precisely captures Kabinett virtues." - 94 points, Vinous
Molitor’s Rieslings are regularly praised by critics, but rarely does the intersection of price and quality end up as favorably for us as this one. Today’s Ockfener Bockstein is a 94-point Kabinett Riesling from a grand cru vineyard made by one of the Mosel’s most prolific and renowned cellarmasters - and it’s only $24.94.
That’s the kind of deal that causes us to do a double-take. Even Vinous reviewer David Schildknect was surprised at his own score given the price and the site and had to go back and reassess. The Wine Advocate claims that no other producer is “cultivating so many grand crus in so many diverse styles...at least not at this mind-blowing level,” and for the newly released 2016s, they write that Molitor “most likely produced his best series in 32 years.”
Molitor’s Green Capsule Rieslings are made in the classic feinherb style: just off-dry with enough lingering sweetness to counter the lip-smacking acidity that Mosel fans adore. While Kabinett is so often seen as the most casual of Rieslings, this is sourced from one of the Saar’s great grand cru sites, Ockfener Bockstein, and has an “impeccably poised, consummately refreshing, exuberantly persistent finish.”
With its endless flexibility at the dinner table, this is a complex but refreshing Riesling to grab with both hands and enjoy for years to come!
