2017 Casa Castillo Las Gravas
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $32.94 (was: $39.94)*
Casa Castillo's Monastrell (Mourvedre) based reds are some of the most head turning values we see year after year, and today’s 95pt ‘Las Gravas’ is no exception. At this price, it’s hard to believe that this is their original flagship wine, from a single gravelly vineyard, and with 95pts, it's the hard evidence that Casa Castillo is a “treasure-trove for fabulous values” (Wine Advocate). With a touch of Garnacha, this hand-harvested Spanish red has equal parts perfumed elegance and muscular energy, in other words, perfectly balanced!
Much like Bandol, or the Southern Rhone, Jumilla’s rocky vineyards and hot mediterranean climate make it a perfect region for the burly Monastrell, which soaks up the sun without ever becoming overdone. Casa Castillo’s work with Monastrell has made them the “leading producer of southeastern Spain” (Wine Advocate), and a reference point for the variety. Blended with 20% Garnacha, the 2017 ‘Las Gravas’ is “for sure the most elegant vintage for this bottling” thanks to a perfect vintage that winemaker/proprietor Jose Maria Vicente felt was the most complete since they began in ‘91. Aged in barrel, with only very little new oak, this dry farmed Monastrell blend is a master class in Mediterranean terroir and given the recent critical acclaim, a must have Spanish red for a great price.
95 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Las Gravas is surprisingly floral and ethereal, perfumed and elegant...This is for sure the most elegant vintage for this bottling...the wine is surprisingly fresh, as if the Garnacha helps to contain the power of Monastrell on the gravel soils, adding texture and perfume. This is beautiful." – Luis Gutierrez
