Today’s “immensely rewarding, inviting” 2017 Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva is another hit from this impressive, medieval era estate. Ever since the 2015 ended up as Wine Spectators #3 wine of the year, Volpaia’s Riserva has tended to fly off the shelves, and the 2017 is sure to follow suit given its quality. Volpaia’s organically grown Riserva shows “striking aromatic intensity and lift” (Vinous), and is likely to live up to its reputation as an amazing food wine in its youth, and drink beautifully over the next ten years, all at a wallet-friendly price!

Castello di Volpaia is one of the “reference-point estates in Radda,” (Vinous) a top quality subzone known for higher altitude vineyards and intensely elegant and refined Sangiovese. Their Riserva walks that tightrope between serious and charming in a way that only a Chianti can. Located in a medieval era hamlet, Volpaia is a little slice of Tuscan history all by itself, and even with neighbors like Montevertine and Querciabella, they are standing out big time. Volpaia’s organically grown Chiantis are “celebrated for their freshness and finesse” (Wine Advocate) thanks to Radda’s higher elevation, and limestone and marl rich soils. This family owned property has been doing everything right for years now, and they are finally getting the sort of serious attention they deserve. That means this just won’t stay in stock for long, so serious Sangiovese fans will want to stock up!

94 points, James Suckling: "A red with plenty of ripe fruit, such as berries and cherries with some fresh-herb and lemon undertones. It’s medium-to full-bodied with bright fruit and fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold."

93 points, Vinous: "The 2017 Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Volpaia is an immensely rewarding, inviting wine. Juicy and racy, with no hard edges, the Riserva captures the allure of this warm, dry year. There is plenty to like in the 2017, starting with its depth and volume, I won't be surprised if the Riserva turns out to be even better than this note suggests. Sweet red fruit, cedar and blood orange give the 2017 striking aromatic intensity and lift." – Antonio Galloni

93 points, Wine Enthusiast: "Aromas of blue flower, spiced plum, new leather and sunbaked earth form the inviting nose on this pure Sangiovese. Made with organically farmed grapes, the smooth, savory palate doles out fleshy black cherry, baking spice and chopped mint alongside velvety tannins that give it a polished texture. Drink through 2025."
