Of the four domaines descended from the great old Louis Gros, the tiny collection of wines produced by Anne Gros include “some of the finest wines in all Burgundy” (Clive Coats, MW). While Anne Gros’ Richebourg and Echezeaux are superb wines, today’s ‘Le Grand Maupertui’ is the true stunner of the lineup and represents just how good the best plots of Vougeot can be. Clos Vougeot is rarely considered the top grand cru for any domaine, especially one with a slice of Richebourg, but Anne Gros’ plot of 90 year old vines in the lieu-dit of Le Grand Maupertui is arguably the finest around, with Vinous’ Neal Martin suggesting that her “highly recommended” Clos Vougeot outshines the Richebourg in 2017! Available here for the lowest price in the US, Anne Gros’ 2017 ‘Le Grand Maupertui’ is a stunning bottle of Burgundy that, even at this high qualitative level, punches well above its price.

Anne Gros began taking the reins at her fathers domaine in 1988, and now works alongside her daughter Julie. Even more recently Anne Gros has taken the surprising, but not unwelcome step of reducing new oak to a third, even for the grand crus, with the Wine Advocate remarking that “purity of fruit and suavity of structure, are the watchwords” now at this Domaine. In a healthy vintage like 2017, full of “supple, charming and expressive” wines (Wine Advocate), this Vougeot is an impressive achievement, with a couple decades of development ahead. Do not miss this!

93-95 points, Vinous: "The 2017 Clos de Vougeot le Grand Maupertui Grand Cru may well be the domaine’s best wine this vintage. It is endowed with more fruit intensity and presence on the nose, offering vigorous raspberry and crushed strawberry scents, superb mineralité and hints of orange blossom developing in the glass. The well-balanced palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and impressive substance and tension toward the finish. An excellent Clos de Vougeot from Anne and Julie Gros." - Neal Martin
