2017 Dominique Lafon Beaune 1er Cru 'Les Greves'
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $84.94 (was: $99.94)*
If you’ve been paying close attention, you might have noticed we never pass up a chance to get one of Dominique Lafon’s exceptional 1er crus from his eponymous Domaine. Lafon is the man behind the iconic Comte Lafon, where he built his reputation as “one of Burgundy's most respected and forward-thinking vintners" (Wine Spectator), but at Domaine Lafon, he has returned to an ultra-artisanal garagiste approach. This 2017 Beaune ‘Les Greves’ 1er cru has all the delicate, red fruited elegance that Lafon seems to be aiming for, with plenty of “length and class” (Jasper Morris), and at a price that is less than half of many 1er crus from Comte Lafon. Lafon hasn’t sacrificed the top notch, biodynamic viticulture he’s known for however, and his crus are farmed by the same team, and made by the man himself. A 1er cru from Lafon typically sells out in a flash, but with the best price of any vintage out there, the 2017 ‘Les Greves’ is not a wine we would linger on for too long!
Lafon was clearly chomping at the bit to experiment and grow as a winemaker after 30 years at the helm of his family Domaine. His new domaine has been an opportunity for Lafon to explore a different style of Burgundy, one that is “little brighter and more vibrant” (Galloni). While Comte Lafon deserves its reputation for world-class wines (with prices to match), Domaine Lafon is exploring a style that is increasingly popular, with more finesse, elegance, and freshness, and at this price it will not disappoint!
90-92 points, Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Slightly lighter in colour than his Beaune Epenotes, with just a gentle red fruit nose - but then an absolute explosion of fruit on the palate, with seamless tannins. There is a wonderful finish to this with excellent length. More sand in the soil here, length and class in the glass."
