2017 Etude Chardonnay Grace Benoist Ranch
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
On Sale: $24.94 (was: $29.94)*
California’s reputation for big, oaky Chardonnay is not undeserved, but the best producers are able to deliver tons of freshness and elegance to match the ripe California fruit. Few of these options have as stellar a track record as Etude however, and their single vineyard Carneros Chardonnay is a terrific value and a modern day classic!
The ‘Grace Benoist Ranch’ Chardonnay has been referred to as “quite Chablis-like in its energy and brilliance” (Galloni) and at $24.94 it’s at that sweet spot that lets you enjoy a top-flight effort any night of the week. Medium bodied, complex and elegant, but still showing loads of ripe fruit, this 2017 Etude Chardonnay is a superb value and it’s available here for the best price around!
Etude is one of the best known names in Carneros, famous for launching Tony Soter’s career back in the 1980s. Winemaker John Priest has been making his own mark at Etude since 2005, making some “seriously impressive wines from estate grown fruit” (Burghound). For white wines, 2017 was an “outstanding year” according to the Wine Advocate, which noted that the “Chardonnays in particular possess incredible energy with lots of layers.” Nestled in a cooler section of Carneros, the Grace Benoist Ranch benefits from the climate near the San Pablo Bay and terrific mineral flavors thanks to the rocky, volcanic soils.
A go-to house white at a great price, go big on this one!
90 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chardonnay Grace Benoist Ranch leaps from the glass with scents of peach cobbler, pineapple upside-down cake and green guava with hints of butterscotch and preserved ginger. Medium-bodied, the palate has a lovely silkiness to the texture and loads of buttered toast nuances contributing to the tropical fruit, finishing with a zippy line of freshness."
