Few sibling teams have been quite so successful (or congenial) as Etienne and Alix de Montille, and between their respective Domaine and Maison de Montille are a wide range of really delightful Burgundies. The goal of Maison de Montille has been to find diamonds in the rough in Burgundy’s unsung appellations, like Saint Romain, without compromising on the winemaking.
The Saint Romain Blanc is a stunning success for the price point, and per the Wine Advocate, Alix de Montille is “one of a number of young vintners unlocking the unanticipated secrets and charms of this appellation.” Her 2017 is mostly sourced from a single vineyard, Les Jarrons, and it is available here for a killer price.
The notion of an artisanal, micro-negociant has gained steam in Burgundy in recent years, with producers like PYCM now fetching critical praise (and high prices) to rival top estate-grown wines. Alix de Montille focuses on “ferreting out excellent sites in the less fashionable villages” (Wine Advocate), and nowhere is that more successful than in Saint Romain. This is the highest elevation site in the Cote de Beaune, which was once a liability when ripening was no sure thing. These days quality winemakers are proving just how out of date the old hierarchy has become. 2017 was a year of “classically balanced and beautifully defined” white Burgundy (Wine Advocate), and an incredible vintage to explore an AOC that very much deserves your attention, especially at under 40 bucks!
91 points, Decanter: "Maison Deux Montille is the négociant arm of Domaine de Montille and is a pun playing on the original involvement of Etienne de Montille and his sister, Alix. This wine is sourced mostly from the Les Jarrons premier cru and sees more lees stirring than the domaine's whites. Racy, creamy and lightly wooded, with welcome minerality. (Drink between 2019-2025)"
