Bodegas Frontonio is one of Aragon’s, and really Spain’s, most exciting young producers. They may have started out as a literal ‘garage’ winery, but these days they’re working out of a 240 year old wine cave, producing some stunning high-altitude, ultra old-vine Garnacha with traditional methods.

Today’s ‘Supersonico’ comes from just two hectares of Garnacha grown at the highest point in the vineyard, and it’s the sort of superlative, artisanal red that makes Spain one of the most exciting, yet affordable wine regions in Europe. Frontonio is “right at the top of the hierarchy in Aragón” (Wine Advocate), and with 94+pts and a price tag of under thirty bucks, this exceptional effort is a shocking value for the quality in the bottle.

The ‘Supersonico’ is the perfect representation of the work Fernando Mora and his partners are doing with ancient vineyards in Aragon, and per the Wine Advocate, if you only get to try one of Bodegas Frontonio’s wines, “I'd recommend this one.” Mora went from falling in love with wine and making his first batch in a repurposed tub, to earning his Master of Wine in a relatively short time, and his enthusiasm is clearly infectious. Mora has worked to rehabilitate neglected old vineyards, some dating to the 1890s, and in 2018 the results really started to pay off. With their hands-off approach, these singular vines produce a finesse-driven red that is “aromatic and expressive” in 2018 and should not be missed by any fan of terroir-centric Garnacha. Salud!

94+ points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: "This is really aromatic and expressive, with tons of notes of violets, a little exuberant and somehow reminiscent of the aromatics of Touriga Nacional, and there's a sensation of grape pulp, plump, juicy and tasty, with very fine tannins, subtle and elegant. A high-altitude Garnacha of finesse.

They are clearly on the way up, each vintage is better than the previous one, and given the fact that 2018 could be the finest vintage in recent times, their 2018s are better than any wines they have produced before, right at the top of the hierarchy in Aragón. Bravo!" – Luis Gutierrez
