2018 Carlisle Winery Zinfandel Papera Ranch
by JJ Buckley Fine Wines
"Brilliant winemaking, a highly committed proprietor, and extraordinarily fair prices make Carlisle a no-brainer for wine consumers looking for fun." - Robert Parker
Old vines like those at Papera Ranch, planted in 1934, have the potential to produce some of the most complex and rich Zinfandel anywhere, and Mike Officer’s Carlisle Winery knows how to get the most out of these distinctive sites. The 2018 from Papera Ranch is a knockout from this “bright, vivid and exceptionally beautiful” vintage (Vinous), and with 96pts from Jeb Dunnuck, this “beautifully done” Papera hits it straight out of the park!
Like many of the Russian River Valley’s oldest vineyards, Papera Ranch is dry farmed with head pruned vines that made it easier to harvest back in the days before tractors or complex trellises. Like the gnarled roots of an old tree, these vines are a piece of California history, and according to Robert Parker, Mike Officer “has done more to save head-pruned, old-vine Zinfandel vineyards than anyone else.” Twenty years after his first vintage, there’s no sign of slowing down!
Earning endless praise from the likes of Robert Parker (“brilliant winemaking”) and Antonio Galloni (“truly magnificent”), Mike Officer has built this boutique outfit into one of the most important sources of California Zinfandel, ranking with Ridge, Turley, and Bedrock. His "beautifully done" 96pt 2018 Papera Ranch will delight Zinfandel fans for the next 10-15 years. Cheers!
96 points, Jeb Dunnuck: "A bigger, richer effort based on 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan from a site in the Russian River, the 2018 Zinfandel Papera Ranch offers a meaty, powerful bouquet of black cherries, red plums, Asian spices, and chocolate. This carries to a full-bodied, beautifully textured, opulent Zinfandel that has ripe tannins as well as the seamless, silky style of the vintage. It's beautifully done."
