Saint Emilion has no shortage of great values, but even so, Chateau Mangot’s 2018 release is surprising by virtually any measure. One of the first 2018s to land in our warehouse, this Saint Emilion grand cru earned a stellar 93-95pts from the Wine Advocate and given the early reviews of the vintage in Saint Emilion, the 2018 Mangot ought to end up at the top of that range. With critical praise across the board and the high quality of the vintage, this under the radar Saint Emilion would be a satisfying buy at double the price, but at only $21.94 it's an absolute must-have for Bordeaux fans to buy up by the case!
In regards to St Emilion in this vintage, Vinous suggests that "some of the most profound 2018s emerge from these pristine vineyards". Who better to get the most out of this vintage than one of the top names in St Emilion, Jean-Luc Thunevin of Valandraud, who now consults at Mangot. And this property is no slouch in the terroir department either, located a stone's throw from Fleur Cardinale and Valandraud, and situated in a cooler sector of the appellation with a clutch of old vines to boot.
Per Vinous, “Saint-Émilion delivers in 2018” with wines that are rich and flamboyant, but don’t sacrifice typicity or balance. The 2018 Chateau Mangot is a classic, layered Right Bank gem that “should easily be an outstanding wine” with a few more years of age (Dunnuck), and will go toe-to-toe with wines at twice the price. 93-95 points, Robert Parker Wine Advocate: "Blended of 85% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Mangot is a little closed to begin, unfurling to show off bright blackberry, crushed blueberries and warm plums scents plus notions of lilacs and cedar. Full-bodied and laden with layers of pure, vibrant black and blue fruits, it has a firm, rounded tannin texture and long, refreshing finish."
