Domaine de Montille has clearly been on a slow burn since 1947, when Hubert de Montille took the reins at the family winery and quietly built one of the most respectable boutique operations in Volnay. Now his son Etienne de Montille and winemaker Brian Sieve are presiding over one of the best vintages they have ever had. Among the many 2018s we’ve had slide across our virtual desk, their 95pt ‘Mitans’ Volnay might be one of the more exciting of the bunch.

De Montille has really elevated the site thanks to low yielding vines and 100% whole cluster, and they've captured a captivating blend of sensuality and structure, with layers of spice to match the very pretty berry fruit. While de Montille does bottle a few grand crus, the ‘Mitans’ proves that their incredible 1er crus (with their reasonable price tags) are where the magic is happening!

Winemaker Brian Sieve has produced a “portfolio of elegant, precise wines” in 2018 (Wine Advocate) that would serve as a masterclass in terroir expression in the Cote de Beaune. The Montille family has centuries of history in Volnay, but Etienne has really made this a Domaine to watch, converting to biodynamics and refining their approach. This is still an old-fashioned estate at heart however, and this sensual beauty will definitely reward cellaring. Cheers!

95 points, Decanter: "Forty-five year old vines that act like they are 80 years' old' is how Brian Sieve describes the vineyard that supplies the fruit for this pale, aromatic, low-yielding wine. With lots of clove and pepper spice from 100% whole bunches, this is savoury, complex and refined with lovely wild strawberry sweetness."

92♥ points, Burghound: "This is also notably ripe, yet it still manages to remain relatively elegant and pretty with a spicy kirsch-like combination of red cherry and dark raspberry. The sleek and natural refinement of Mitans is present on the delicious and lightly stony flavors that culminate in a dusty, moderately austere and sneaky long finish. This lovely effort is more structured than it usually is and will need at least some patience."
