Domaine Pinson has a special place in the history of Chablis, being one of the first to bottle and sell directly back in the 1940s. These days the competition may be fiercer than ever in the region, but when it comes to “high-quality Chablis at wallet-friendly prices” (Wine Advocate), Pinson seems to have it in the bag.

Their ‘Montmains’ 1er cru is one of the top examples in the lineup, with 65+ year old vines on that classic chalky soil (plus some blue clay). While Chablis is beloved for its zippy and mineral tinged quality, the best 1er and grand crus have an added level of depth and texture that take things to the next level. Pinson’s 2018 from Montmains is “so promising” and “wonderfully complex and nuanced” (Vinous) from start to finish, and with 94pts is outperforming its price point.

Father-daughter team Charlène and Laurent Pinson are never dogmatic about their approach, though they generally avoid new oak, using a mix of older barrels and steel, and their wines are beautifully pure and expressive. 2018 is a wonderful vintage for impatient Chablis fans as it is showing much of its charm right out of the gate, and this Montmains is really firing on all cylinders today. Cheers!

94 points, Wine Enthusiast: "A touch of greengage and lemon play alongside wet chalk on this wine's nose. The palate then spreads out across the mouth like a blanket of chalky coolness, tinged with lemon freshness. There is concentration, vivaciousness and a graceful stony and chalky elegance. The finish reveals richer creaminess that sits well with the chalk and lemon."

92-94 points, Vinous: "The 2018 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is wonderfully complex and nuanced. Spice, dried flowers, tangerine and hazelnut overtones add shades of dimension throughout. The 2018 is generous and plush, but also light on its feet, with veins of minerality that come alive in the glass. Ample and creamy through to the finish, the Montmains is so promising." - Antonio Galloni
