One of Sonoma’s “iconic families and longtime growers” (Parker), Martinelli is very much a fixture in Northern California, with the advantage of having some of the finest vineyards in the state. This single vineyard Chardonnay from Lolita Ranch is on par with the Golden State’s best, and has been called a “California version of Corton-Charlemagne” (Parker).
From the heart of the Russian River Valley, Lolita Ranch is classic effort through and through. A “satiny, seamlessly fresh and transparent” Chardonnay, it’s the sort of charmer that will win over nearly any Chardonnay fan, and with fewer than 200 cases produced, it’s a hard to find gem you won’t want to miss.
Despite their larger scale, Martinelli has survived the ups and downs of the last century by being one of the “most meticulous farmers” in Sonoma. Their style can very much still be described as old fashioned Californian, big and intense in flavor, but well balanced too, and per the Wine Advocate, “at their best, these wines are stunning.” Lolita Ranch was originally part of the Martinelli family back in the late 1800s, but was sold to a neighbor. Martinelli brought it back into the fold in 1999, and replanted much of the vines, and it is once again a core part of their Russian River stable. Martinelli has managed well in the 21st century, picking earlier to accommodate warmer vintages, and the family “remains unique and a real crown jewel in California” (Vinous). Cheers!
94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Chardonnay Lolita Ranch has pure aromas of roasted almonds, saline, white peaches and honeysuckle with an underlying mineral character. The palate is satiny, seamlessly fresh and transparent, with bright, citrusy fruits at this youthful stage and a long, mineral-driven finish. 193 cases produced."
93 points, Vinous: "The 2018 Chardonnay Lolita Ranch is bright and effusive. It offers terrific freshness and aromatic presence, despite being the warmest Martinelli Chardonnay site. All the elements are so nicely balanced in this understated, beautifully persistent Chardonnay. Time in the glass really allows the layers to open up. Lemon confit, almond and chamomile linger on the creamy finish. Drink 2022-2030"
