Tuscany’s ‘Sassicaia’, arguably the greatest Bordeaux blend made outside of France, has a little sibling, ‘Le Difese’, that seriously overdelivers for the price. Coming from younger vines on the property, this Cabernet/Sangiovese blend is an extraordinarily well priced Tuscan red from Tenuta San Guido’s estate vineyards. Even at its regular price, it is “one of the finest values in Tuscany” (Vinous), but for under $25 this is one you should be stocking up by the case!
Tenuta San Guido made history by releasing their Cabernet blend from the then-unknown region of Bolgheri in 1968. Despite the status as a historic property, they are “on a roll these days” (Vinous), earning perfect scores and topping year end lists.
This delicate and elegant Cabernet beautifully reflects the Maremma terroir with delicate red berry fruit, floral perfume, and spice. It is definitely made to be enjoyed today, and carries the same level of understated refinement that’s kept Sassicaia so popular. This price is practically unheard of for an estate like Tenuta San Guido, so we recommend grabbing this Tuscan red with both hands!
91 points, James Suckling: "A medium-bodied red with plum and cherry character. Walnut and bark undertones. It’s creamy and savory at the finish."
90 points, Vinous: "The 2018 Le Difese is a very pretty, understated wine. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, dried herbs and a touch of spice bring out the more delicate side of Maremma Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all, the 2018 will drink well right out of the gate." - Antonio Galloni
90 points, Wine Spectator: "Evoking cherry, cedar, olive, iron, sanguine and tobacco flavors, this appealing red is firm and balanced, with a lingering, tangy finish of mineral and woodsy underbrush elements."
