When it comes to Central Coast Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Melville is pretty much the name to beat. Occupying a fabulous stylistic middle ground between classic Californian and elegantly Burgundian, Melville is one of the Santa Rita Hills’ most popular names at this price point, and their latest Chardonnay is no exception.
Recently awarded 93pts from the Wine Advocate, Melville’s 2020 Estate Chardonnay absolutely maintains their reputation for making “some of the greatest values in the world of wine today” (Wine Advocate). That's quite remarkable given their estate happens to be one of the “top vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills”, yet their pricing means “these wines represent sensational bargains for wines at this quality level” (Parker).
Melville only opened their doors in 1997, but now second generation brothers Chad and Brent are truly setting the tone here in this AVA. Their Chardonnay vines are mostly planted on the western side of the vineyard, where the microclimate is coolest and the soil is sandiest. The character here is balanced in the texture, but the personality is very much coastal. At $34.94, this may be priced above an everyday Chardonnay, but given the amount of less satisfying Chardonnay at $50+ out there, we think it’s a steal from one of our favorite names on the Central Coast.
93 points, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: "The 2020 Chardonnay Estate has rich aromas of peaches, honey, chamomile and baker's yeast with gentle herbal tones. The palate offers bright freshness and nutty, honeyed fruits, and it finishes long and textural. Drink date 2022-2032"
