"Gorgeous on all counts, it’s a shockingly good Côtes du Rhône..."
- 94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Xavier Vignon is a bit of a power player in the Rhone Valley, being the vintner behind the label on several of the top scoring estates in the Chateauneuf du Pape. So naturally when a man like this has an eponymous project on the side, paying attention earns some serious dividends.
Jeb Dunnuck refers to this unconventional wine as “a shockingly good Côtes du Rhône,” and we were really taken with it when we opened a bottle recently. Sourced from the Septionale and Meridionale regions (hence SM), this idiosyncratic bottle is more like a Chateauneuf du Pape than a Cotes du Rhone, but at a price fit for the latter.
While the quality of the juice he consults on has received voluminous praise in the past (Raymond Usseglio, Beaurenard, Marcoux and Grand Veneur), his own label Xavier Vins is getting some serious press from the team at the Wine Advocate:
- The wines show "textbook characteristics of the terroirs from which they come. In addition, the prices remain remarkably low, and these wines are a treasure trove for the savvy buyer."
- "I continue to love the wines from vigneron Xavier Vignon. His wines always deliver on the fruit and texture front, yet never lack for typicity or Provençal charm."
- "doing a top-flight job of getting impressive quality into the bottle. Moreover, there are some top values in their portfolio as well."
Given that it is from one of the most serious and lauded vintners in the Southern Rhone, this is a terrific buy, but quantities are limited so act fast. Cheers!
