The 1961 Chambertin Grand Cru turned out to be the best example from this decade, even though the potentially brilliant 1962 was in absentia. Noticeably deep in hue, it has an intense, concentrated bouquet with dark berries, Lapsong Souchang and faint ash-like aromas. This builds and builds with aeration. The palate is tannic and, typically for a 1961 red Burgundy, sports a muscular structure redeemed by harmony and a smooth veneer. Very persistent in the mouth with impressive density on the finish, this is a marvelous Chambertin with plenty of horsepower. Tasted at the Rousseau Chambertin vertical at La Vienne.
