The 1963 Colheita Tawny Port was bottled in 2019 with a long cork. It is a field blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão coming in with 163 grams per liter of residual sugar. This is a better showing than the last time I saw this about five years back. A fine entrant into the Colheita collection this report, this leads off the 1960s subset. Mature and deep, this still has a fresh feel and a bright, spicy finish to go with a notable hit of sugar and plenty of classic flavors. It has the darkest color of the 1960s-era Colheitas this report. It has a fair share of dark chocolates, too, but also a lot of caramel. The fruit profile is on the mature and dark side, but this holds its balance and never seems too old. It is impeccably balanced, in fact. This is not a simple and lighter-styled one, though, even while it remains fresh, elegant and lively. Its full-bodied demeanor is impressive, and it coats the palate nicely, its unctuous texture taking control. In a great group, this would be my pick, but it is certainly close enough to argue about. This is not always the biggest, the deepest or the most powerful of this report's group, but it does everything very well, and it puts everything together. - Mark Squires
