Domaine Cazes has stocks of Rivesaltes VDNs going back to 1931, just four years after Aimé Cazes convinced his father to expand his vineyard holdings and set about building their wine estate. Given the vibrancy of this 1978, it seems almost a crime to drink it now, as it will last for decades more. The nut tones are rich rather than toasted, like marzipan from lightly toasted almonds; the fruit feels supple and fresh, with sweet orange rind and juicy fig flavor. With fragrant notes of tobacco and bay leaf and a light texture, it’s surprisingly delicate. As one taster put it, “You could drink this all night long.”

The 1978 VDN Rivesaltes Aime Cazes is comprised of 80% Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, and 20% black Grenache, that spent 22 years in cask. Sporting a fabulous light gold color, it burst from the glass with notions of dried plums, fig, toffee and creme brulee. Full-bodied, seamless and incredibly layered and silky, with vibrant acidity keeping it light and downright gulpable, it’s a brilliant Rivesaltes that will probably age forever. - Jeb Dunnuck

There's a pronounced warmth to this wine, with notes of bergamot, orange-chai tea, baked peach, candied walnuts and golden raisins. It's thick and fairly sweet in aroma and flavor, but with ample acidity to balance. The alcohol is well integrated and isn't noticeable on the palate or finish, though the viscous texture leaves a slick impression on the palate that lingers alongside all the enduring earthy, herbal spice.
