WS 93

Wine Spectator, June 2009

Berry, cherry and chocolate on the nose, with hints of spices. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a spicy, cedary, dark chocolate aftertaste. Very silky and caressing. Grabs your attention. Muscular for Cheval...

Vinous, October 2011

Bright red. Very pure floral nose with enticing aromas of redcurrant, violet, minerals, licorice, lead pencil and coffee: very cabernet franc! Then linear, pure and juicy, with pristine flavors of red berries, dark plum...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, February 2019

Medium bodied, fresh, earthy, floral wine, with a steak of herbs, and leafy notes. There is softness to the tannins, but there is a leafy, green, discernable note in the otherwise, red plum finish. There is no reason for...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, February 2014

Tasted in Southwold, the Cheval Blanc 1988 is what you might call a "solid" Saint Emilion, one that has plateaued in recent years. The nose is quite backward considering its age and demands encouragement, gradually...

Chateau Cheval Blanc is a Premier Grand Cru Classe “A” estate located near Pomerol, but within the commune of Saint-Emilion. Its 39 hectares are divided into forty-five plots. While most of the appellation's other famous estates have limestone soil, Cheval Blanc's soil is alluvial, with roughly equal proportions of gravel and clay.

The vineyard has an original combination of grape varieties: 49% Cabernet Franc, 47% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. Each plot has its own specific profile and, to a certain extent, are treated like separate vineyards because of differences in the age of the vines, grape variety, soil type, surface area, type of rootstock, etc. The combination of these many facets accounts for Cheval Blanc’s great complexity.

Archives show that vines have been grown at Cheval Blanc at least as far back as the 15th century, but the most prestigious part of Cheval Blanc's history can be dated from 1832 when the core plot of the present-day estate was purchased by Jean-Jacques Ducasse, President of the Libourne Trade Tribunal. Over the next twenty years, the purchase of plots belonging to Chateau Figeac led to the vineyard as we know it today.

The impressive 6,000 square-meter cellar adjacent to the chateau, designed by Christian de Portzamparc and inaugurated in June 2011, houses a state-of-the-art winemaking facility and features two enormous waves of white concrete that rise magnificently out of the ground. There is a garden of wild grasses atop an artificial hill, whose gracious curves are overlooked by the chateau. The wine cellar holds fifty-two concrete vats in six rows.

Formerly known as vin de Figeac, this wine was first sold under the name Cheval Blanc in 1852. The first gold medal won by Cheval Blanc came at the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris and that distinction appears on the label.

Each vineyard plot is vinified separately. At the start of fermentation, the juice is gently pumped over three times daily. As fermentation proceeds, pump-over frequency decreases and is eventually stopped when the desired level of extraction has been reached.

The young wine is aged 16 to 18 months in new French oak barrels. Six to seven different coopers are used to ensure complexity and harmony. During this period, the wine is racked by hand five to seven times. Blending takes place after the first three months.

The 1988 Cheval Blanc is a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious Saint Emilion region in Bordeaux, France. This vintage is a true gem, offering a captivating experience for wine connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike.

In the glass, this wine exhibits a deep and alluring red color that is a testament to its age and complexity. The nose is immediately greeted with an enchanting bouquet of floral aromas that dance harmoniously with notes of cherry, berry, and invigorating mint. Each inhalation reveals new layers of depth, inviting you to explore further.

On the palate, the 1988 Cheval Blanc showcases its remarkable balance and finesse. The flavors of cherry and berry present themselves with a remarkable freshness that defies its age. The minty undertones add an intriguing twist, elevating the overall tasting experience. The wine's maturity is evident, as it has had ample time to develop a velvety texture that glides effortlessly across the tongue.

This vintage is already showing its true potential and is drinking exceptionally well at the moment. However, its aging potential should not be underestimated. With proper cellaring, this wine will continue to evolve and delight for years to come.

Renowned wine publication, Wine Spectator, awarded the 1988 Cheval Blanc an impressive score of 92 points. The tasting note highlights its freshness, fruitiness, and balanced qualities. The reviewer suggests that while it is enjoyable now, it has the capability to further develop with time.

The 1988 Cheval Blanc is a marvelous representation of Bordeaux winemaking at its finest. Its elegance, complexity, and aging potential make it a must-have for any serious wine collector. Indulge in this remarkable vintage and allow yourself to be transported to the enchanting vineyards of Saint Emilion.
