It appears the slump in quality that began in 1983 at Branaire-Ducru has been resoundingly stopped by a new winemaking team that turned in a superlative effort in 1989. Reminiscent of the 1982 the 1989 has a forward expansive bouquet of ripe plums and minerals that leaps from the glass. In the mouth the wine is pure silk. Luscious to the point of opulence this medium-bodied wine is bursting with chocolatey blackcurrant fruit. Aging in oak casks (of which 40% were new) has given it the definition it needed as well as some tannic firmness but this is a lusty Branaire to consume early in life. Anticipated maturity: 1993-2005. Tasted six times. Consistent notes.

Harmonious balanced and very fresh '89. Color is medium-dark ruby with lovely fresh floral and raspberry aromas. Medium- to full-bodied well-integrated tannins and a fruity minty aftertaste.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal... Harmonious balanced and very fresh '89.
