WS 97

Wine Spectator, January 2014

This still broods seriously, with dark plum, currant and blackberry fruit, studded with charcoal, singed tobacco and cedar notes and backed by a serious grip of roasted earth. The gorgeously long finish is driven by...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, May 2008

On the nose, one can immediately detect the greater percentage of Merlot in the blend: more red fruits evident with touches of kirsch and cranberry, evolving a slight cooked meat aroma in the glass. The palate is...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, February 1998

Bottled very late (November, 1997), the 1995 has continued to flesh out, developing into one of the great classics made under the Mentzelopoulos regime. The color is opaque ruby/purple. The nose offers aromas of licorice...

Vinous, July 2018

The 1995 Château Margaux is a vintage perhaps unfairly over-shadowed by the imperious 1996. That is unfair because the late Paul Pontallier crafted a great First Growth this year. It has a very impressive, quintessential...

Decanter, July 2023

A surprise. Initially deceived by its light colour, I was taken by the beguiling intensity of plummy fruit aromas with hints of smoke, earth and a first suggestion of truffle or forest floor. The texture is softening now...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, April 2022

Firm, masculine, hard style of Margaux with ample, ripe, fruits, great aromatics, but the tannic spine will take at least another decade to soften, that is if it does. The finish has a touch of greeness in the endnote. I...

Chateau Margaux is a famous wine estate in the Medoc region, which along with Lafite, Latour and Haut Brion, was rated a First Growth in the original 1855 Bordeaux Classification. It covers 262 hectares, of which 82 hectares are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, and 12 hectares to Sauvignon Blanc.

In the 12th century, the property was called “La Mothe de Margaux” (the Margaux mound) and by the 16th century, wine was being produced at the estate. In 1705, the London Gazette advertised the first auction of 230 barrels of “Margose” and the 1771 vintage was the first “claret” to appear in a Christie’s catalogue. Indeed one of America’s Founding Fathers and vintner in his own right, Thomas Jefferson, visited this great estate in the late 18th century and declared it to be a vineyard of “first quality”. When Bertrand Douat, Marquis de la Colonilla, acquired the estate, he built the chateau that is often nicknamed the “Versailles of the Medoc”, a rare example of the neo-palladian style in France.

Andre Mentzelopoulos purchased the property in 1977, investing heavily in the estate and a program of improvements. Since his death in 1980, the property has been run by his daughter Corinne who continued his work in restoring the chateau to its former glory.

Since the 17th Century, the grand vin of Chateau Margaux has been recognized as one of the greatest wines in the entire world. It owes its unique qualities to the genius of its terroir as well as to the passionate work of a succession of generations. It’s a remarkable wine that comes from a combination of characteristics that are only rarely found: finesse, elegance, complexity, density, intensity, length and freshness. Although its tannic concentration may be exceptional, it’s rare to detect astringency.

The great vintages are distinguished by their formidable ability to move us, while the lesser vintages give pleasure to wine enthusiasts. Chateau Margaux has an extraordinary ability to evolve with age, developing finesse, aromatic aromatic complexity, and a remarkable presence on the palate.

Introducing the 1995 Chateau Margaux, a Bordeaux Blend that hails from the prestigious Margaux sub-region in Bordeaux, France. This wine is a true gem, exuding elegance, power, and refinement in every sip. With its deep red color and a cork closure, it exudes a sense of tradition and sophistication.

Upon pouring, the 1995 Chateau Margaux reveals itself with a bouquet that is nothing short of captivating. It opens with enticing aromas of dark plum, currant, and blackberry, which are beautifully complemented by notes of charcoal, singed tobacco, and cedar. As you delve further into the glass, a serious grip of roasted earth emerges, adding depth and complexity to the wine.

On the palate, this Margaux is medium to full-bodied, showcasing extraordinary richness and fabulous equilibrium. The tannins, although still reminiscent of old-school style, are integrated seamlessly, providing a solid structure that promises longevity. The wine offers an impressive length, with the smoldering edge lingering on and on, leaving a lasting impression.

Renowned wine critics have praised the 1995 Chateau Margaux for its exceptional qualities. Wine Spectator awarded it an impressive score of 97 points, describing it as a "brick house of a Margaux" with more power than refinement. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate bestowed a score of 95 points, commending its richness, equilibrium, and user-friendly nature. Neal Martin's Wine Journal gave it a score of 96 points, highlighting its medium-bodied palate with firm tannins and intense flavors.

This vintage has continued to evolve gracefully over the years, and it is suggested to be enjoyed now through 2034. However, for those who have the patience, it will be fascinating to witness the wine's evolution over the next half century.

In conclusion, the 1995 Chateau Margaux is a wine that embodies the essence of Bordeaux winemaking. It is a true masterpiece, showcasing the unique terroir of the Margaux region. Whether you choose to enjoy it now or cellar it for future enjoyment, this wine is sure to impress even the most discerning connoisseurs.
