(95+) This is a great, great bottle of young red Burgundy. The bouquet explodes from the glass with candied black cherries, plums, notes of grilled venison, herb tones, violets, a touch of bitter chocolate, minerals and a fine base of vanillin oak. Roumier’s Bonnes-Mares can be a bit burly in its youth, but the 1995 shows a suave and potentially silky side to its character that is absolutely unheard of for this wine at such a young age. On the palate the wine is deep, full and laser-like in its focus, with great intensity, a solid core of fruit in reserve in the mid-palate, fine, sophisticated tannins, and a long, complex, multi-dimensional finish. My tasting ledger has great bottles of Roumier Bonnes-Mares dating all the way back to the mid-1940s, and the only Bonnes-Mares I can recall in this league from the Roumier family is the larger than life 1990! This is clearly a legend in the making and a very strong candidate for wine of the vintage. (Drink between 2005-2050)
