It's a big wine but deceptive; the tannins are airy and lilting there's charm and underneath enormous complexity. It's best left alone for a few more years but it's really very lovely now.

Aromas of redcurrant, dried flowers, truffle and camphor. In this dry, warm year featuring an early harvest, Beringer used almost all mountain fruit to make its Private Reserve. Still a bit clenched in the mouth owing to slightly spiky acidity on entry, but the middle palate reveals strong mineral and brambly berry flavors. Just a tad tart on the back end. Will this wine eventually absorb its acidity and soften in bottle? I'm not sure.

Complex aromas of dried currant anise herb and tar are rich and elegant on the palate with the tannins softening. Has excellent structure. The best of two bottles.--1996 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now... Complex aromas of dried currant anise herb and tar are rich and elegant on the palate with the tannins softening. Dark ruby garnet color with a purple core and vibrant purple rim. A classical cabernet perfume lifts from the glass featuring blackberry and cassis accented by vanilla bean mocha and an underlying earthy profile of loamy clay. The palate is vibrant and fresh with an attack of creme de cassis liqueur and wild brambly blackberry leads to a silky mid-palate. The juicy core of flavors are framed nicely by French oak offering supple yet precise tannins. This wine is just hitting the early part of its optimal bell curve for drinking but by all accounts this wine will provide perfect drinking for up to another decade. I agree with the Spectators assessment of the '96 vintage in Napa as a Sleeper of the Decade!
