Bright gold with a lively mousse Deep pungent nose features powerful scents of minerals saffron pear lilac buttered apple pear white peach and marzipan. Broad and improbably concentrated the pear and apple flavors packing a huge punch and complicated by buttery leesy tones. As rich and supple as this is it also boasts brilliant cut. Finishes with expansive exotic spice and pear notes and superb focus and length. This spent nine years on its lees. Already delicious but I'd opt for holding this one for another decade before popping the cork.

One of the most expressive, complete 1996s today, the Winston Churchill is in a great spot. Butter, spice, almond and lemon oil notes meld together effortlessly in the glass. In 1996, the Winston Churchill is a clear overachiever. Best of all, it remains reasonably priced vis-à-vis its peers.

(94+) Out of magnum, the 1996 Cuvée Winston Churchill from Pol Roger was initially quite tight, but it blossomed beautifully with extended aeration and really showed stunning potential. The superb nose eventually offers up a complex and classy mélange of apple, pear, caraway seed, a great base of complex soil tones, just a faint whisper of honeycomb and a nice touch of rye bread. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and quite powerfully built, with a rock solid core, firm structural elements, pinpoint bubbles, great acidity and stunning length and grip on the beautifully focused and utterly refined finish. The 1996 is one of the most powerful vintages of Cuvée Winston Churchill that I have ever had the pleasure to taste and it should prove to be a legendary year for this consistently fine wine. This drank better on day two than it did on day one, strongly indicating that several more years of bottle age will prove most rewarding. (Drink between 2015-2045)

(18/20) Tasted blind. Deeper gold than the 2004 in magnum. Mousse is still fresh but not as lively as the 2004. High acid. 1996 bottle? High acid. 1996 bottle? Very tight even though it has quite a bit of development and richness and some bruised apple on the nose – more oxidative. But has great length and intensity. I like the combination of complexity and crisp acidity. Demonstrative rather than elegant but needs drinking in the next few years. (JH)

Label

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvee in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne : robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated.

Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage-dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines.

Winery

Pol Roger

Pol Roger is one of the oldest and most-distinguished luxury Champagne firms. Based in the heart of Epernay, it was established in 1849 and remains one of the few family-owned, grande-marquee Champagne houses. Five generations have remained loyal to the firm’s essential values of excellence and independence, ensuring that each wine is treated as an impeccable ambassador to their 160 years of history.

Pol Roger has carved out one of the most flattering reputations in the select circle of the leading Champagne brands. A personal favorite of Sir Winston Churchill (who has the firm’s top cuvee named after him), Pol Roger champagne has also been the British Royal Family’s choice over the years.

The house grows more than half its grapes on 89 estate hectares and sources the rest from select growers. Their cellars extend below the Avenue de Champagne for over seven kilometers on two levels. The deeper cellar maintains a lower temperature for the wine to develop finer bubbles.

The Pol Roger portfolio includes a vintage brut, a non-vintage brut, a brut nature, a demi sec, a vintage rose, a blanc de blancs and the Sir Winston Churchill prestige cuvee.
