The 1996 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru is definitely an improvement over the 1998 and 1999 that were tasted alongside. It has a lovely nose with brambly red fruit, spicebox and wilted rose petals, becoming increasingly sappy with aeration. The palate is well-defined with fine red berry fruit and nicely judged acidity. Yes, there is a little stubbornness toward the finish, and you could argue that it's a bit clunky. But this is at least pleasurable to the senses and continues to drink well. Tasted at the Clos des Epeneaux vertical in London.
