The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, black currants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savory, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years. - Robert Parker

This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant mint and spices. Full-bodied soft and velvety with a fruit finish. Starting to drink well now.--Lynch-Bages non-blind vertical. Best from 2008... This is much more open than the 1995. Offers aromas and flavors of currant mint and spices. Cabernet sauvignon-typical aromas of blackcurrant, violet, tobacco, dried herbs and minerals, complicated by a touch of smoky oak. In a distinctly firm, structured style, but with juicy acidity intensifying the dark berry and mineral flavors. Building flesh and sweetness on the back half counterbalances the wine's firm spine, spreading out nicely on the lingering finish. Though currently a little clenched and austere, this wine offers excellent precision and wonderful balance. - Ian D'Agata

This is much more masculine and austere on the nose than the 1995. Very typical of a 1996 Pauillac with scents of cigar box and smoke, although there appears to be less fruit intensity and opulence than the 1995. A silky entry, good fruit concentration although there is not the precocity of the 1995. Perhaps just pushed a little too much, the 1995 showing more natural balance and harmony. Very sweet on the finish, perhaps too sweet with blackberry, raspberry and a touch of plum. Good length, but I err towards the 1995 at this moment. Drink 2010-2018.
