Tasted blind in Hong Kong, the Romanée St Vivant 1996 from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has a wonderful bouquet of raspberry coulis, orange zest and a touch of freshly tilled soil that infuse the red and black fruit. It's actually a little muted at first and demands 30 to 40 minutes in the glass to really show its fruit. The palate is very well defined with sappy blackberry and raspberry, then a subtle marine influence that makes its mark on the structured, almost Richebourg-like finish. This is a deceptive, mercurial wine, seemingly a little lost at the beginning, but magically gains weight and intensity with aeration, therefore I strongly recommend decanting this wine.
