Ample rain fell during winter, leading to an early bud break in late March. From May through September, temperatures hovered between 26°C and 32°C, only topping 32°C for 33 days. Harvested ended on 26 September, and yields averaged 2.75 tons per acre. Considered a controversial wine at the time for its boldness, it was a standout of the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter New York masterclass tasting, offering a deep, dark hue, from which came beautiful loamy soil, an array of brown spices, and a rich, full-bodied, mature expression of Napa Cabernet, balanced by plenty of freshness and tension. It’s a wine that will keep and pay dividends for another 15-20 years, maybe more.
