(Release date 1/1/02)The spectacular 1997 Brunello di Montalcino which has been bottled but will not be released until January is a thrilling seamless example of Brunello that I hope is indicative of how special this vintage will be. A deep opaque ruby/purple color is atypical for Brunello but the nose of dried herbs spice box fruitcake red and black fruits minerals and earth is stunningly complex. It is full-bodied with supple tannin a velvety texture and a tremendously long finish.
