Wine Spectator, January 2009

Blackberry, sweet tobacco and citrus fruit on the nose. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a fruity finish. A little tight still, but impressive for the vintage. Very pretty and better than I remember.—'88/'98 Bordeaux...

Chateau Gloria is one-of-a-kind, created by Henri Martin who purchased plots piece-by-piece, but exclusively from crus classified in 1855. The 50 hectare vineyard spans three areas: the middle of Beychevelle, the west of Saint-Julien and, on the north, on the border of Pauillac.

The vines include 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot on Gunzian gravel soil over a layer of clay and sand. Average vine age is 40 years.

Chateau Gloria also has a second wine, Chateau Peymartin, produced using the estate's youngest vines.

Chateau Gloria is harvested by hand, with traditional vinification and fermentation in heat-regulated stainless steel vats. The wine matures for 14 months in casks, 40% of them new. Recent vintages have featured jammy fruit, typically prune and black currant, with rich but approachable tannins.
