The 1998 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is relatively youthful on the nose: dark berry fruit, cola and earthy scents. I don't find the oak as well integrated here compared to other vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, well-balanced, backward and sinewy. It gallops along nicely without every demanding reams of superlatives. Tasted blind at the Wallace brothers' Xmas dinner. -- Neal Martin
