The 1998 Cuvée Winston Churchill is a superb wine that is drinking very well out of the blocks, but possesses the depth, balance and grip to cruise along nicely for a couple of decades. The deep and complex nose offers up a superb mélange of apple, brioche, grapefruit zest, a fine base of soil, a touch of sea salt and delicate notes of nutmeg in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and focused, with very refined mousse, and a long, seamless and elegant finish. If one were to nitpick, the depth here is good, not great, and the wine does not possess quite the customary core of fruit in reserve as is typically found in the Cuvée Winston Churchill. But for drinking over the coming decades, it will offer up outstanding breed and complexity, and it does not have to be waited on in the cellar. (Drink between 2008-2025)
