Wine Enthusiast, December 2011

With its richness and great density of flavor, this is always a great Champagne. This 1999 is rounder than some vintages, less mineral, while still retaining the balance between white fruit and toast. It is still young...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, March 2023

The first vintage of chef de cave Dominique Petit, the 1999 Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill is an especially rich, generous rendition of this bottling. Revealing aromas of buttered toast, sweet stone fruits, orange confit...

Wine Spectator, December 2011

Subtle, with hints of ripe apple, almond paste, white peach and honey. There's a smoky mineral baseline, and though well-integrated the acidity is lightly chalky on the fine-grained palate. Drink now through 2019. 400...

Neal Martin's Wine Journal, January 2011

Tasted at the Pol Roger dinner at The Ledbury. Pale Tasted from magnum, the nose is consistent with the bottle tasted earlier this year, the Chardonnay really driving the bouquet forward, although there is a curious...

Wine & Spirits, December 2011

Complex and mature, this has a pear nectar-like richness as well as fresher apple and lemon curd notes. It finishes with the toasty, pastry crust scent of an almond tart. A firm and creamy Champagne to serve with mousse...

Pol Roger is one of the oldest and most-distinguished luxury Champagne firms. Based in the heart of Epernay, it was established in 1849 and remains one of the few family-owned, grande-marquee Champagne houses. Five generations have remained loyal to the firm’s essential values of excellence and independence, ensuring that each wine is treated as an impeccable ambassador to their 160 years of history.

Pol Roger has carved out one of the most flattering reputations in the select circle of the leading Champagne brands. A personal favorite of Sir Winston Churchill (who has the firm’s top cuvee named after him), Pol Roger champagne has also been the British Royal Family’s choice over the years.

The house grows more than half its grapes on 89 estate hectares and sources the rest from select growers. Their cellars extend below the Avenue de Champagne for over seven kilometers on two levels. The deeper cellar maintains a lower temperature for the wine to develop finer bubbles.

The Pol Roger portfolio includes a vintage brut, a non-vintage brut, a brut nature, a demi sec, a vintage rose, a blanc de blancs and the Sir Winston Churchill prestige cuvee.

Champagne Pol Roger created their Prestige Cuvee in homage to Sir Winston Churchill, mindful of the qualities that he sought in his champagne : robustness, a full-bodied character and relative maturity. The exact blend is a closely guarded family secret but it is undeniable that the composition would meet with the approval of the man to whom it is dedicated.

Pinot Noir predominates, providing structure, breadth and robustness whilst Chardonnay contributes elegance, finesse and subtlety. Composed exclusively of grapes sourced from Grands Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, which were already under vine during Churchill's lifetime, Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill is only made in the very best vintages and is always released later than the other vintage-dated Champagnes from Pol Roger, marking Churchill's appreciation for older wines.

On the palate, this wine showcases a fine-grained texture and a subtly chalky acidity, all beautifully integrated. The smoky mineral baseline adds depth and complexity to the overall flavor profile. Each sip reveals layers of flavors, including sweet stone fruits, orange confit, pastry cream, and a hint of nougat. The generous attack and gourmand character of this wine make it a truly indulgent experience.
