The 1999 vintage of Château Magdelaine was another complete mystery to me prior to our March tasting, as I had never crossed paths with a bottle of this vintage. The wine turned out to be quite good, as it wafts from the glass in a very pretty and sappy blend of plums, cherries, cigar wrapper, soil, nutskin, tobacco ash and a touch of nutty oak. On the palate the wine is impressively deep and full-bodied for the vintage, with a sound core, still just a bit of backend tannin and fine focus and grip on the pretty long and well-balanced finish. Really quite a nice middleweight vintage of Magdelaine and a good value, if one can still find it in the market.
