Wine Spectator, May 2004

A tight and chewy wine with full body and lots of raisin and spice character. Impressive ripe tannins. Thick and powerful; needs time in the bottle. From one of the most serious producers in Montalcino now. Best after...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, April 2005

The 1999 Brunello di Montalcino is for me the best produced to date (though there will unquestionably be a Riserva from the vintage next year) a blackish garnet with a sizeable and warm nose of plums resin liquorice and...

Tenuta Castelgiocondo, situated to the south-west of Montalcino at an altitude of around 300 meters, is an ideal terroir for the production of Sangiovese. The altitude, excellent solar exposure, and well-drained soils enhance the wines of Castelgiocondo, distinguished for their strength and extraordinary longevity.

The territory of Castelgiocondo is dominated by the castle, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road leading from the sea to Siena. This property is one of the first of 4 estates to produce Brunello di Montalcino, beginning in 1800. It belongs to the Frescobaldi family whose wine history dates back over 700 years.

Today, Lamberto Frescobaldi has taken over the business, and with his long technical experience, aims to further strengthen the uniqueness of the wines of each individual estate in their portfolio.

Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino is produced from an uncompromising selection of the finest Sangiovese Grosso grapes. The vineyard site, with its ideal elevation, well-drained soils, and southwest-facing exposure, yields all of the qualities to produce the ultimate expression of the varietal. It is an elegant, well-balanced wine of magnificent structure.
