One of the most remarkable Syrahs I tasted from California is Carlisle's 1999 Syrah Sonoma. A riveting example of this varietal it was aged in 100% French oak (60% new) but has soaked up the wood with remarkable ease. Akin to dry vintage port it oozes with blackberry blueberry and creme de cassis characteristics has an unctuous texture magnificent concentration as well as purity and an oversized yet impeccably balanced palate. A ripe expressive style. Dark rich and concentrated with layers of complex blackberry cherry chocolate wild berry and mocha maintaining a sense of elegance and finesse.
