Neal Martin's Wine Journal, November 2011

Tasted at Farr’s Ducru-Beaucaillou dinner at the Ledbury. Consistent notes when compared to last year with a spellbinding bouquet: blackberries, smoke, a touch of dried herbs and pine needles with stunning delineation and...

jamessuckling.com, June 2016

I must admit that I was a little unimpressed with the Ducru 2000 in the beginning when I tasted it after bottling in 2003. But it's clearly outstanding now and seems to get better and better with age. It shows wonderful...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, November 2023

Continuing to age in a positive direction the wine has added secondary nuances of leafy tobacco, cigar box, cedar, spice, and dried flowers to its core of blackberries and currants. Full-bodied, with a nice depth of...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, August 2020

Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the medium to deep garnet-brick colored 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou charges out of the gate with flamboyant scents of baked black currants, raisin cake, prunes, Chinese five...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, October 2015

(18.5/20) If bordeaux, St-Julien in particular, is about symmetry, proportion and a certain majesty, this Ducru is a very fine example. The great counterpoint of the 2000 vintage – freshness with ripeness, intensity with...

Wine Spectator, January 2016

This has mature hints, but there's great focus as the cedar, bay and leather notes race along with, rather than pull away from, the core of fig and blackberry fruit flavors. The long, bittersweet cocoa—dusted finish...

Decanter, June 2021

The 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou is a great example of the quality of this terroir in St-Julien. With a slightly smoky bouquet and graphite, dark berries, plum and spices aromas, it has a sappy and velvety inner mouth, very...

Vinous, July 2022

The 2000 Ducru-Beaucaillou is very deep in colour. Surprisingly, the nose is very backward in this example with quite intense black cherries, boysenberry, prune and fig aromas, gaining clarity and vigour with aeration...

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named after the beautiful large stones that characterize its unique Saint-Julien terroir. Unusual for Bordeaux, it is one of the only castles to be built directly above the barrel cellars and one of the few estates producing a ‘Grand Cru Classe’ still inhabited by its owners. The Borie family has owned this estate and has lived here for over sixty years, in the sumptuous aromas of their wine.

Rated a second growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, Ducru sits on an exceptional site with incomparable views over the Gironde estuary. Its 75-hectare vineyard is planted 70% to Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% to Merlot with an average vine age of 35 years.

Today, the estate is managed by the company Jean Eugene Borie SA, which is owned by Mrs. Borie, her daughter Sabine Coiffe and her son Bruno-Eugene.

Ducru-Beaucaillou is a fine, elegant, and delicious wine with a long finish - in short, an archetypal Saint-Julien. The grapes are hand-picked, and the sorting process takes place on mobile tables in the vineyard to keep the healthy grapes separate from substandard ones. Fermentation is by traditional techniques and only the best fruit is used to produce the wine.

The 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou is a magnificent exemplar of a Bordeaux Blend, hailing from the esteemed region of Bordeaux, France, particularly the St Julien sub-region. This red wine is a harmonious blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, presenting a medium to deep garnet-brick color that is indicative of its robust character.

The nose is an alluring composition of intense black cherries, boysenberry, prune, and fig, with a hint of Chinese five spice and eucalyptus. It's a wine that requires serious decanting to fully appreciate its rich, layered aromas. The addition of aged notes like cigar box and new leather, along with a touch of cast iron pan, adds a sophisticated depth to the nose that is truly captivating.

On the palate, the 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou is medium-bodied, with a refreshing yet decadent layer of dried berries and spice. Saturated tannins provide a firm backbone to this robust wine, with liquorice-tinged black fruit that leads to a gripping, almost menthol finish. The long, bittersweet cocoa-dusted finish provides a solid bass line to the overall orchestration of this wine.

This wine stands out for its remarkable freshness, intensity, and finesse, earning accolades from Vinous, Wine Advocate, and Wine Spectator, among others. The palate is textured by soft, powdery tannins and ends with a long, mineral-laced finish.

With an alcohol percentage of 13.0 and a cork closure, the 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou is a wine that has evolved brilliantly over the years and is set to continue to impress even further. It is a testament to the winemaking prowess of Ducru Beaucaillou, blending tradition and innovation with finesse.
