jamessuckling.com, April 2014

A typical Palmer showing finesse alongside strength. I love the blackberry, plum, chocolate and cedar character. It’s very long and beautiful. The velvety, textured tannins are impressive.

Decanter, June 2020

Now at 20 years old, and absolutely singing, after a sometimes frustratingly slow start to its life. The tannins are ripe but rich and still broad-shouldered, and it will probably still show at its best with a good plate...

This bottle was much better than the one tasted a few months ago. With the texture of pure silk, from the moment the wine left the glass, it was where it needed to be with its perfume seemingly created in a tobacco shop...

Wine Spectator, January 2016

Still tight, with a core of black currant, blackberry and plum fruit flavors that is quite youthful, while hints of dried anise, tobacco and singed alder are starting to peek through on the finish. There's a really...

Breathe deep to enjoy the curl of violet and woodsmoke aromatics that are coming out of this glass. Softened russet pink around the edges at 21 years old, still deep ruby through the core. The fruits are a little more...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, May 2016

Tasted at the Château Palmer vertical in London, the 2000 Château Palmer was closed for a number of years, but it appears to be finally opening. Deep in colour, there remains a slight broodiness on the nose, although it...

Vinous, September 2021

The 2000 Palmer is a very different “beast” than the 2001, and I use that word intentionally. This is much more feral on the nose, and quite ferrous, presenting leather and dried herbs, smudged red berry fruit, and a hint...

Wine Enthusiast, June 2003

At this stage this is very closed very tight giving little. But it is possible to discern that this is going to be a beautiful wine. There are flavors of sweet raisins and the fruit has a new world richness but the...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, March 2010

18/20 Dark crimson. Dusty nose with real energy - one of the most exciting wines so far in this respect! But with a Margaux lightness of touch. I really like this even if it's not super snazzy.

Chateau Palmer, classified a Third Growth Bordeaux, is in the commune of Cantenac, the heart of the Margaux appellation.

The Palmer vineyards, originally part of the larger estate of Chateau d’Issan, cover 66 hectares of gravelly soil on terraces overlooking the Garonne River. There are equal amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (47% each). The remainder is Petit Verdot. From 2014 forward, the entire property has been farmed biodynamically.

Chateau Palmer is named after Major General Charles Palmer of the British Army, who bought the estate in 1814 from Marie de Gascq. A passionate man, he invested a great deal of time, energy and money to develop his property, purchasing land and buildings in the communes of Cantenac, Issan, and Margaux, and by the 1830s, his property covered 163 hectares, 82 hectares of which were vineyards. “Palmer's Claret” quickly gained popularity in London clubs and even found favor in the eyes of the future King George IV.

Charles sold the estate in 1843. The current owners, the Sichel and Mahler-Besse families, have been in place since 1938. Their focus throughout has been on authenticity, quality and consistency.

Finesse and elegance, typical of the great wines of Margaux, are the trademarks of Chateau Palmer. The unusual combination of grape varieties for a classified Left Bank wine–as much Merlot as Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Petit Verdot–gives Chateau Palmer a bouquet of extraordinary complexity, with fruit, flowers, and spice wrapped in a fleshy and generous structure. The subtle balance between aromatic richness and powerful, yet always restrained, tannins makes Palmer charming even when very young.

The grapes are fermented separately by variety and plot in 54 conical, stainless steel vats. The wine then ages 18 to 21 months in French oak barrels, less than 50% new.

The 2000 Chateau Palmer is an absolute delight to the senses. This Bordeaux blend is a captivating blend that hails from the prestigious Margaux region of Bordeaux in France. The wine is a testament to the expertise and finesse of its producer, Chateau Palmer.

Aged with a cork closure and presenting a deep, rich red color, this wine boasts an alcohol content of 13.0%. It is a testament to the quintessential taste of a Bordeaux blend, a type of wine that is renowned for its full-bodied texture as well as its rich, complex flavor profile.

Distinguished reviewers have repeatedly heaped praise on this wine. The Wine Enthusiast, for instance, described it as a 'beautiful wine' that offers flavors of sweet raisins and a new world richness balanced by the structure of dry tannins. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, meanwhile, spoke of its potent blackberry, strawberry, and mint aromas, and its intense and vibrant layers of black cherry and cassis fruit, underscored by a fine line of acidity.

Vinous' Neal Martin described it as a 'very different beast', with a feral nose, a hint of fig, dry tannins, and a medium body. Wine Spectator appreciated the core of black currant, blackberry, and plum fruit flavors, while James Suckling lauded the finesse and strength of the wine. Jancis Robinson, Decanter, Jeff Leve, and Jane Anson all echoed similar sentiments, with scores ranging from the high nineties to the high nineties.

This is a wine that can be savored now, but its complexity and depth suggest that it will continue to evolve and surprise over time. The 2000 Chateau Palmer is an exceptional wine, an experience that will transport you to the vineyards of Bordeaux with each sip.
