janeanson.com, January 2022

Delicate but clear tannic struture, textured blackberry and raspberry fruits, concentrated with touches of tobacco, saffron and espresso. This has structure and depth. The 1995 is more graceful today and I would suggest...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, June 2010

Fully mature, the 2000 D’Issan is a quintessentially elegant, yet concentrated, aristocratic Margaux that defines the appellation. The wine has a dark ruby/purple color just beginning to lighten at the edge. Notes of...

TheWineCellarInsider.com, January 2024

Blackberries, currants, cedar, tobacco leaf, spice, strawberry and herbs create the nose. The palate is fresh, crisp, crunchy, spicy and a bit tart, with an olive and leafy, peppery endnote. It’s time to drink over the...

View From The Cellar, April 2014

Château d’Issan produced a very good wine in the 2000 vintage, but it is still several years away from starting to blossom and drink with generosity. The deep and still quite primary nose delivers scents of cassis, tar...

Jancis Robinson's Purple Pages, June 2010

Attractive evolution on the nose. A more evolved bottle than the one tasted at the château a couple of days before. Very Margaux with no heaviness but some polished tannins still in evidence. 17/20

Wine Spectator, March 2003

Pretty aromas and flavors of berries plum and hints of fresh herbs. Full-bodied with velvety tannins and a medium finish. Slightly more on the finish would give it 90. Best after 2008. 8330 cases made. (JS)

Chateau d’Issan is located in the center of the Margaux appellation and rated as a third growth in the official Bordeaux Classification of 1855. Mild weather, moderated by proximity to the sea and the Gironde Estuary, provides ideal conditions for vine growth. The vines are, on average, 35 years old. The estate has 44 hectares of vines in Margaux, 5 in Haut-Medoc and 10 in Bordeaux Superieur.

Chateau d’Issan has a long history dating back to the 12th century when it was a fiefdom with the name of La Mothe-Cantenac. It already had an established reputation long before the 1855 classification, reportedly served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henri Plantagenet, future King of England, on 18th May 1152.

The estate has been handed down from generation to generation through inheritance and marriage until from 1575 onwards, it has been owned by five generations of the Essenault family who contracted their name and renamed the property “Issan”.

Chateau d’Issan expresses the exquisite bouquet so characteristic of Margaux, and stands out for its suppleness, subtlety, elegance and long aging potential.

The wine is made from the old vines in the Chateau d’Issan enclosure in the middle of the Margaux appellation. The soil is mainly comprised of surface gravel on a clay subsoil, contributing to optimal ripeness and freshness in the estate’s two grape varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The wine is aged in barrels for 16 to 18 months, half of which are new.
