Wine Spectator, April 2006

Top 100 #27! Aromas of currant berry and light vanilla. Full-bodied and structured. Fine tannins but not giving much now. This is big and powerful. Needs lots of time. Best after 2010. 21000 cases made

Tenuta Castelgiocondo, situated to the south-west of Montalcino at an altitude of around 300 meters, is an ideal terroir for the production of Sangiovese. The altitude, excellent solar exposure, and well-drained soils enhance the wines of Castelgiocondo, distinguished for their strength and extraordinary longevity.

The territory of Castelgiocondo is dominated by the castle, an ancient stronghold built in 1100 to defend the road leading from the sea to Siena. This property is one of the first of 4 estates to produce Brunello di Montalcino, beginning in 1800. It belongs to the Frescobaldi family whose wine history dates back over 700 years.

Today, Lamberto Frescobaldi has taken over the business, and with his long technical experience, aims to further strengthen the uniqueness of the wines of each individual estate in their portfolio.

Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino is produced from an uncompromising selection of the finest Sangiovese Grosso grapes. The vineyard site, with its ideal elevation, well-drained soils, and southwest-facing exposure, yields all of the qualities to produce the ultimate expression of the varietal. It is an elegant, well-balanced wine of magnificent structure.
