Bright and plummy with strawberry and cherry character and hints of toasted oak and spices. Full-bodied with velvety tannins and a ripe rich aftertaste. This has stuffing. Better than 2000. Best after 2008. 2300 cases made. –JS

The 2001 Barolo Castiglione is very pretty and delicate, with aromas of flowers, crushed raspberries and anise followed by a mid-weight palate of red fruit that finishes with a nice sense of freshness. A bit austere today, this classic young Barolo will reward several years of bottle age and is usually the first of the Vietti wines to reach maturity. Made from a blend of various vineyards, this wine is also one of the best values in Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. - Antonio Galloni
