The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon is a glorious example of elegance combined with power purity and richness. A compelling wine in all senses it reveals a haunting bouquet of acacia flowers raspberries blueberries black currants graphite and pen ink. The sweetness of the tannins and medium to full-bodied extraordinarily poised and breathtaking mouthfeel that builds incrementally is all about nobility and balance. It is an honor to taste this special wine. Drink it over the next 20-25 years.

Shows off a mix of dense concentrated flavors with touches of herb bell pepper currant and cherry. Finishes with a solid wall of tannins. Score range: 92-94 (JL)

Exceptionally concentrated crimson. Very dark. Sweet and so young there are practically fermentation aromas still! Big and yet beguiling. Lovely soft texture. A bit like I imagine the 1990 in its youth. Very well made... Exceptionally concentrated crimson. Very dark. Sweet and so young there are practically fermentation aromas still! Big and yet beguiling. Lovely soft texture. A bit like I imagine the 1990 in its youth. Very well made. Rather glamorous and ritzy – even a slight hint of coconut. Although it’s obviously a hot vintage there is Spottswoode elegance too. No shortage of alcohol though…! 14.9% 18+/20 (LM)

Sweet, ripe fruit redolent of cassis and black cherries is perfectly filled out by creamy oak and root beer-like spice in the inviting aromas of this medium-full-bodied wine. It is supple but never soft in feel on the palate and has an appropriate spine of firming tannins in reserve. Well-stuffed and decently polished, it is likely to reward immediate drinking for those who are impatient but it will certainly improve with bottle age, and a wait of four to six years would seem the better choice.

Rich aromas of black raspberry, currant, roasted plum, dark chocolate, graphite, minerals and baking spices. Big, round and sweet. An atypically lush and chocolatey-rich wine for Spottswoode, with a bit less black fruit and floral character than usual but solid underlying minerality. Finishes broad and long, with horizontal tannins that seem a bit tougher than those of the young 2003. The estate sold off a lot of their wine in bulk in 2002, eliminating the lots that they considered overripe and less ageworthy.

The estate is in St. Helena. The wine is dry, tannic and too young, an obvious cellar candidate. Those tannins mask the underlying core of black cherry, black currant and cocoa fruit. Those tannins mask the underlying core of black cherry, black currant and cocoa fruit. This is a lovely, fine Cabernet, rich and supple, that should start showing well by 2010.
