The 2002 Vaucrains from the Gouges family is an excellent example of its vintage, wafting from the glass in a nascently complex and very classy aromatic constellation of black cherries, cassis, venison, an outstanding signature of soil (particularly for a 2002!), youthful Nuits nutskin, a touch of lead pencil and the first signs of the autumnal elements that will emerge with further bottle age. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very refined for a relatively young Vaucrains, with a good core of black fruit, moderate tannins and lovely acids adding bounce and brightness on the very long, focused and very well-balanced finish. If one were to nitpick, the mid-palate depth here is not quite in the same league vintages like 2001 or 1999, but this is a very strong 2002 red Burgundy that will be a lovely drink in a few more years’ time.
