The 2002 Opus One is a clear step up over the 2001 and offers a round, lush, classic Napa style in its ripe black fruits, smoked tobacco, chocolate, and cedar pencil-like aromatics. Full-bodied on the palate, it stays nicely balanced, has ripe, supple tannins, and a great finish. If the 2001 is Bordeaux-like, this is pure Napa Valley goodness. It’s fully mature yet should easily evolve for another 10-15 years as well.

An improvement over recent vintages the 2002 Opus One boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as an attractive bouquet of damp earth cassis licorice and spice box. Medium-bodied with noticeable but supple tannin excellent purity and a moderately long finish it is excellent possibly outstanding but remains significantly over-priced vis a vis the finest wines in this price range.
